‘The box didn't quite meet expectations.’ Well, that’s one way to put it.

West Point archaeologist Paul Hudson was one of many at the academy who were waiting for a 195-year-old time capsule to be opened at a ceremony earlier this month.
The box was discovered inside the base of a monument dedicated to Thaddeus Kosciuszko, a Revolutionary War patriot, during renovations on the West Point campus last May. Per a press release, West Point officials believe cadets placed the box inside the monument in 1828.
Before the big reveal, cadets chimed in with their own guesses about the contents of the nearly 200-year-old lead box, with theories ranging from an American flag, to boots, to a class ring, per the BBC.
However, when gloved officials finally lifted the lid off the metal box, inside was nothing but dust.
‘We don't want to think that they went to all the trouble to put this box in a monument and not put anything in it,’ Hudson said.
Still maintaining hope, the faculty said they would conduct further research into the box. Staff also surmise ‘that moisture could have disintegrated any organic matter inside, like paper or wood,’ per Reuters.
